Pour Out
There is a story in the Bible about a woman with an alabaster jar. This pendant is a symbol of the jar. The charm is lovingly hand made of a beautiful polished genuine white alabaster gemstone. The pendant includes a Swarovski crystal poured from the jar that represents a tear. Here is a paraphrased version of the story as it is written in all four of the gospels.
In the town of Bethany, six days before the crucifixion of Jesus, one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him. A woman heard that Jesus was eating at a Pharisee’s house, so she went there with an alabaster jar of expensive perfume. She broke the jar and then she poured it on His head. She poured it on Jesus' feet. As her tears fell on His feet, she wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But someone objected, "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It is worth a year's wages." They were scolding the woman about this. But Jesus said, “Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to me. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have me. She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for the burial.”
This story is about love and sacrifice. It is about the gift of extraordinary giving. We are reminded that we should pour out onto others. Pour out by giving a precious item of value to someone or our resources to others. Even more meaningful is to pour our time into others. When we pour out onto others, it is a personal sacrifice. It is an offering and a love gift. One of the most valuable things we have is our time. Too often we selfishly save our times for our own wants. Let this necklace be a reminder to pour out something from within to others. It is amazing how God pours out his loving kindness into us, his forgiveness and how Jesus pours out His supernatural peace and spirit into us. Let this pendant represent your own tears of sacrifice and love to pour out as others’ needs cross your path. If you pour yourself out to others to help satisfy their needs, God will uphold you and satisfy your desires.
God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Let us be reminded to pour out our gifts, talents, love, and time into others as well. As Jesus said about the woman, “she has done a good thing”, and “she did what she could”. It is time for us to do what we can while we are able.
"No one has ever become poor by giving." "You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving" (Martin Luther King Jr.).
What are you doing for others? Ask God to show you how to pour out onto others as He has for us. Delight in the journey and the infilling of joy that comes from your sacrifice and serving others.
Now, if someone asks you about your pendant, you have a great story to tell!
